Faslane: European Day of Action Against Nuclear Weapons
Volunteers from War Resisters' International's affiliate Trident Ploughshares organised a local awareness raising activity on 3 April 2010 as part of the European Day of Action Against Nuclear Weapons, which was co-organised by the partnership Europe for Peace.
About 100 persons participated in a demonstration at the Faslane nuclear submarine base, to raise awareness about nuclear weapons in Europe.
The protesters marched from the Peace Camp to the North Gate of HM Naval Base Clyde, near Helensburgh, home the UK's nuclear weapon system.
Faslane is the base for the Vanguard-class submarines, which carry Trident nuclear missiles.
As part of the awareness raising activity, the protesters blockaded the North Gate for two hours. There were no arrests.
The activity was part of Europe-wide action, one month prior to the NPT (Non-Proliferation Treaty) Review Conference.
Similar awareness raising activities were held in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands and Turkey.
The awareness raising activity got coverage in local and national media, for example:
